McClory offers a very interesting look at how the Catholic Church was structured historically, how it changed, movements towards democracy in the US church and elsewhere, current movements for and against change, and some potential futures. He is particularly focused on the Vatican II (and earlier) view of "The Church" as living in the community of the faithful and not in the hierarchy. I liked the history bits best as they were a succinct reminder of some easily forgotten/ignored episodes in Church history, but the writing is very clear and compelling throughout. Fascinating for lapsed Catholics, frustrated Catholics, and those sure they know the correct course for the Church.
