Theism and Ultimate Explanation: The Necessary Shape of Contingency
This book is a dense and at times terse examination of (non-Lewisian) modal realism. O'Connor argues, unsatisfactorily to my mind, for too much in this short book. He argues that in order to ground genuine modality, one needs a transcendent, personal, necessary being. He also argues that Spinozistic necessitarianism is untenable (although he only states in an endnote that he just doesn't understand Spinoza's own metaphysics), that reductive accounts of modality and modal-epistemology are unsatisfactory and that God exists. All of this in 144 pages.
This is an ambitious project to be sure, and O'Connor notes this in many places throughout the text. That said, the book suffers, I think, as most of his arguments seem to either merely shift the burden (often leaving me feeling as if I am in no position to have any intuitions whatever), or to assert without much argument intuitions that I share to widely varying degrees (from, 'not at all' to 'okay, sure'). But, as I said, O'Connor does seem aware of the sketchy manner in which he here argues. Overall, I would like to see a more fleshed out account of this project.
