England, the Fens, a moody and mysterious land by the sea one-hundred years ago...
Coming back from taking clothes and food to one of the poorer families in the parish, Megan, the vicar's daughter, and Ivy, a servant in the household, are caught in a sudden storm. Soon the flat land is blanketed in snow, leaving the young women unable to find the road; they can no longer even see the spire of Megan's father's church. A tumble into a dyke leaves Megan soaked and half frozen. Ivy is about to leave her to go and find help when suddenly two strikingly handsome men appear as if from nowhere and help the young women back to their cottage, where they are obliged to forget propriety and spend the night.
Megan is enchanted by Jonathan, and finds excuses to visit him, embroiling Ivy in her intrigues. Although Ivy tries to protect her mistress' reputation, she soon becomes the accomplice to an intense love affair. She and Ben, Jonathan's younger brother, strive to protect the lovers, and a gentler bond forms between them.
What Megan does not realize is that the man she has lost her heart to is a Shapeshifter. Jonathan is a wild creature at heart belonging to a hidden world of myth and magic Megan can hardly believe or understand. Yet it is already too late, heart and soul she is possessed by a man who haunts her nights with a passion that begins blurring the line between dreams and reality, a dangerous position indeed for a vicar's daughter...

The shifting heart
While I had been prepared to be swept away by the promised passion within these pages, I found myself more and more dissatisfied by the story. Of romance, there is precious little, since the two "men" in this story aren't really men at all but otherworldly creatures for whom romance and earthly passion mean little. In its place are obsession, possession and a constant driving need for sex that consumes male and female alike. When shifting occurs, it devolves the humans involved until they have nothing left but their overwhelming need for the incubus-like creatures that have entered their life. Even death brings them nothing but ghostly couplings that are occasionally witnessed by the living.
With little more than sexual attraction binding these people together, I became swiftly disenchanted with this novel. It's definitely not to my taste though people who prefer unrelenting smut may prefer it.
