Janov states that the imprinting of early Pains into the infant's developing nervous system accomplishes two things: first it sets up a lifelong pool of residual tensions, and second, it directs and shapes behavior in particular ways.

Interesting yet, in my opinion, occasionally a bit forced. After reading this book and others on the psychology of young children I am tempted to believe that although the birth experience does lay a template on how to respond, the way we behave and feel as adults is more due to the compounding we experience during our childhood.
