The overwhelming majority of the existing work on the international relations of the Middle East has an empirical, historical approach and either uses no theory or is, implicitly rather than explicitly, in the Realist theoretical school. The virtue of this book is that it focuses directly on the theoretical questions raised by the success of the Palestine Liberation Organization in gaining recognition and support for its cause. The Realist approach is abandoned in favour of the Global Politics approach.
