No pretzels necesssary. Ask someone about meditation and the responses will be varied, but along the lines of, 'I can't meditate, my mind is too busy', 'Isn't it one of those weird religions?', 'Oh, I don't get involved with those New Age things', 'I don't think I could learn to empty my mind', or 'Why on earth would I want to sit like a pretzel?'

Meditation is often confused with religion or New Age concepts but it is neither a religion nor do you have to believe in New Age concepts. There are no rules that one has to sit in a certain fashion, chant certain words, or believe in certain values in order to use meditation. And as far as sitting in a pretzel-like position, let me tell you I can't do it! I love pretzels. I just don't want to be one. But I CAN meditate and so can you.

Meditation is a simply a natural function of our brains, something we all can do. In fact, we produce the meditative state throughout the day without even being aware of that fact. Where people face difficulties is in producing the meditative state when they want. In the Meditation Sourcebook: Meditation for Mortals, there are many how- to exercises as well as practical information on how to avoid the common stumbling blocks both novices and more experienced mediators face. For those who are intimidated by the fear that you won't do it right, or that you can't do it right, I urge you to read this book.

I wrote this book as a down-to-earth book with no 'secret jargon'. I wanted it to be as though I was sitting in your living room having a conversation with you. Meditation is not just for a few select and privileged people. And for those who do regularly meditate, I also urge you to read this book. I hope to help you stretch your imaginations to find new and exciting ways to use this wonderful tool.

All right, take a deep breathe... relax ... and put this book in your shopping cart!

Holly C. Sumner ([email protected]), the author, February 7, 1999.
