The image of the English gentleman in twentieth-century literature
This treatment of English school stories in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries is somewhat dated and untheoretical, and it is definitely selective in its coverage, focusing on more 'literary' examples of boys' public school stories. It is also rather lightly referenced for my taste. Three major themes recur: the public school as preparation for imperial and military service; the school as a site of de-individualisation; and the psychological abnormality supposedly resulting from education in a closed, homosocial environment. Despite its flaws, the book is quite readable, and is a reasonable introduction to (one part of) the school story genre.
