On the day before Christmas in 1956, a lonely man in a London flat begins writing down a strange and tantalizing account of how his life was altered by a love affair in a world of deceptive wealth and glamour. It begins one icy winter morning in 1923 outside the London and Provincial Turkish Baths on Jermyn Street, when two men accidentally embrace to keep from falling. One is Clive B. Vivian, a twenty-year-old aristocrat in a tailor-made suit; the other is a department store clerk of the same age who calls himself Mr. Page. They look silently at each other, and in that one brief moment an obsession is born that lasts for over thirty years. At the heart of their story is a house, a house haunted by a blond angel of a man who embodies both of their dreams. From the moment that he receives his first invitation to visit Clive's magnificent mansion on Brooke Street, Mr. Page begins to speculate. Is the handsome young blond really just a servant? And if he is not a servant, then just what is going on behind the locked doors of the house on Brooke Street - a house that becomes an icon?
