A beautifully crafted narrative that illuminates a fascinating period in American history. Basing his narrative in part on original materials uncovered through years of research, the author places individuals and families in the context of their times. The stories of five families explore life in colonial Connecticut, early Yankee migration to the Upper Connecticut River Valley, the founding of Dartmouth College, the settlement of New England Planters in Nova Scotia before the Revolution, the history of Stafford in Federalist Connecticut, and missionary activity in western New York State. American commercial ties to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and England and the development of New York City into the nation's pre-Civil War center of commerce also form prominent threads in the family tapestry. The Hatch and Brood of Time concludes with genealogical notes and biographical sketches on Phelpses, Wheelocks, Denisons, and Harings.

About the Author:

Peter H. Judd was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1931. He received his A.B. from Harvard College and, after military service, a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He currently resides in New York City.
