Toward the aim of building on previous collections rather than duplicating them, editor Tolliday (economic and social history, U. of Leeds, UK ) has done several things: chosen articles that provide empirical, rather than theoretical analysis; concentrated on journal articles that are not widely accessible (including English-language work by Japanese scholars); shied away from reprinting "classic" texts that are readily available elsewhere; and organized the collection around specific themes, each with a guide to further reading.
