The Book of Lost Tales 1 stands at the beginning of the entire conception of Middle-earth and Valinor. Embedded in English legend and English association, they were set in the narratve frame of a great westward voyage over the Ocean by a mariner named Eriol (or Ælfwine) to Tol Eressëa, the Lonely Isle, where Elves dwelt; from them he learned their true story, the Lost Tales of Elfinesse. In the Tales are found the earliest accounts and original ideas of Gods and Elves; Dwarves and Orcs; the Silmarils and the Two Trees of Valinor; Nargothrond and Gondolin; and the geography and cosmology of the invented world.

The book of lost tales
If you want to know more about the prehistory of The Lord of the Rings, want to delve into old and long forgotten tales, this is the right collection for you. You read about how the world was created, who the gods were, hear about Tulkas, Valinor and the evil Melko (brilliant character). Each tale has a comment and plenty of explanation. There are even poems included and thousands of strange sounding names. For every Ring fan an absolute must read. The tales often reminded me on nordic myths. This is pure escapism. Highly recommended, though a bit difficult with all the annotations, glossary, comments and notes.
