The Russo-Japanese War in Manchuria was the first 20th century conflict fought between the regular armies of major powers, employing the most modern means – machine guns, trench warfare, minefields and telephone communications; and the battle of Mukden in March 1905 was the largest clash of armies in world history up to that date. A good look at the forces of the Russo-Japanese War, focusing on the gear and the lack of gear both sides had to deal with. I really got a good sense of the terrain and climate of Manchuria. It also gives a good insight into the politics of Russia and how they viewed the Far East provinces. I found it interesting that for both the Japanese and Russians the officers had to purchase so much of their gear on their own.
