Boys are not reading because the books that are out there don't have anything to do with being a boy. This is the second in a series of books designed to get those boys to read. The idea is simple enough. Give them stories they can identify with as boys and they will read them. Give them enough such stories and they will become readers. The author, Robert Holland, has written essays for Audubon, Yankee, New England Monthly, The Christian Science Monitor, and Connecticut Magazine. His first novel The Hunter was published by Stein ! Day and then published in France, Germany, and the UK. He studies under Rex Warner at the University of Connecticut and Stephen Minot at Trinity College.
Maria, Peter, and Brian are drawn into a mystery surrounding the 1940 shooting and disappearance of a gangster on the farm they've just moved to in Connecticut.

"The Rainbow Promise" was a refreshing read in that it had nothing to do with boyfriends, peer struggles, etc. and the characters openly used God's Word.
I understand this was written years ago when Becky was a teen, and she shows great promise as an author! There were some discrepancies but overall, the story flowed and kept my interest through the novella.
The one thing I didn't particularly care for was when the girls claimed promises that weren't necessarily in God's Word. Like, "He promised me that we'd have a fun time" when one cannot back that up with Scripture. This is just a personal pet peeve of mine when talking about God's will and His promises.
I received this book in a book exchange, but was not required to leave a review.
