While on a field trip to the National Museum of American History, nine-year-old Lucy imagines herself as Andrew Russell, taking a picture of the joining of the Central and Union Pacific Railroads at Promitory Summit, Utah, in 1869.
Lucy is taking a picture of her friends Kevin, Tomas, and Emma in Railroad Hall at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. when she drops her camera. As she picks it up, she sees a sketch of a famous photograph of the completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad. Lucy's imagination then takes over, putting her in the shoes of photographer Andrew Russell as he takes the picture. The story is filled with historical information authenticated by the curators of the Smithsonian Institution and is accompanied by a historical summary and a glossary. Part of the "Smithsonian Odyssey" series, this book does a wonderful job of bringing history to life.
