The Italian Military Governorship in South Tyrol and the Rise of Fascism Book

The book analyses the period of the Italian military governorship in South Tyrol (Alto Adige) just after the armistice and the end of the first World War. During this period the region was put under the control of the Italian army and of a military governorship which was charged with the "normalization" of this area after the conflict. This first government showed to be inspired by the principles of tolerance and moderation and clashed with the aggressive nationalist attitude of the most radical sectors of Italian politics. The documents of the governorship, as a matter of fact, prove to be an interesting source to analyze the friction existing between these two strategies, the liberal one of the army, and the nationalism of men like Tolomei and Mussolini, who after some years finally prevailed and imposed on the German minority of South Tyrol their policies of de-nationalization.

Giuseppe Motta is university researcher at Sapienza university of Rome where he teaches Modern History and Eastern European History. He worked at the universities of Cluj (Romania) and Bergamo and he is member of the Institute of Italian-Romanian Studies of Cluj, and editor in chief of the Academic Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies. His research studies are focused on the Central-Eastern European history and, in particular, on the protection of minorities in this region.
