The Evolution of the Book
Despite some conceptual cruft and unneeded technical cataloging, Evolution of the Book is a gem. While the main thesis - that the progression of book technology has followed the model of Steven J. Gould's concept of "Punctuated Equillibrium" - is questionable (and really unnecessary), the book is packed with amazing anecdotes and facts about the incredible progression of portable information storage design.
The volume tends to lose some of its peppy charm toward the end, as Kilgour attempts to plumb the depths of advances in digital document technology with some of the same detail as that which he explores the development of scroll and parchment. Instead, a simple survey of the most successful of these technologies may have been sufficient. What's more, I would guess many readers are more interested in this book as a record of what happened before the 20th century!
Despite a few drawbacks, this is a great read, and a wonderful volume for anyone interested in the History of Information.
