The 5-Minute Sports Medicine Consult Book

This new addition to The 5-Minute Consult Series is a clinically oriented quick consult reference for sports medicine. For the first time, common sports-related problems faced by primary care practitioners are thoroughly and concisely presented in the famous fast-access 5-Minute Consult format. Chapters on musculoskeletal problems cover basics; diagnosis; acute treatment, including on-field management; long-term treatment, including rehabilitation and referrals; and commonly asked questions. Other chapters address the special populations of children, adolescents, females, geriatric athletes, and disabled athletes and general medical problems in athletic individuals. Appendices include clinical care algorithms, a guide to the preparticipation examination, and patient education handouts.

Description: This PDA-based electronic book contains background education and clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of common sports-related medical conditions and injuries. It requires either Palm or Pocket PC operating systems and on the Palm platform uses approximately 1.2 MB of memory.
Purpose: The intention is to allow rapid access and point-of-care referencing of important background and treatment information that will aid in the care of active patients.
Audience: This is intended for physicians, trainers, students, and other clinicians who deal with the health and medical care of athletes and active individuals. It is most useful to practitioners in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics and emergency physicians and any who encounter patients in acute athletic settings. Team physicians and team trainers may find the reference of most use, especially practitioners in training or new to sports medicine.
Features: Installation and set-up is straightforward and even novice PDA users will feel comfortable getting the program up and running. A wide breadth of topics is covered, ranging from acute fracture care to headache and nosebleeds. Only extremely uncommon or infrequent topics are not reviewed. The "find" function works very well and pull down menus add to the ease of navigation and allow for quick access to desired information. Multiple headings for each subject facilitate directed learning but also categorize information for more in-depth understanding. The information is presented in standardized format so learning to use the software is effortless. ICD-9 codes are given which makes clinical care more efficient. Handy references are included for each topic if further reading is desired.
Assessment: This software is extremely helpful in the clinical setting. It provides quick access to pertinent information and is easy to use. The headings allow rapid navigation to information for decision making during an office visit. Clinicians in training and primary caregivers will find this product particularly useful.
