Reviewer:Celso Agner, MD, MSc(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description:Since the first edition of this book in 1996, many diagnostic, technological, and neurosurgical technical advances in the treatment of tethered cord syndrome in children and adults have occurred. This new edition accurately addresses those changes.
Purpose:The purpose is to explain the recent developments in the clinical, radiological, and neurosurgical areas involved in the management of tethered cord syndrome.
Audience:Neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and radiologists are the targeted audience. Dr Yamada has studied the topic extensively throughout the years and is one of the leading experts in the field.
Features:The first few chapters are similar to the previous edition since they cover the definition, diagnosis, and clinical presentation of tethered cord syndrome, including the initial controversies surrounding its naming. This edition updates the field with current studies related to imaging and diagnostic tools such as newer MRI sequences and 3D reconstruction of the spine. The book spends a good deal of time on the urological aspects of tethered cord, medical management, and indications for neurosurgical management. It adds new information on image-guided and minimally invasive surgeries, and intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring in patients.
Assessment:Over 40 authors contribute to the 21 chapters in this excellent revision, which is suitable for neurology, neurosurgery, and radiology libraries.
