I read this book years ago, but I'm looking for ways to talk to teachers about scaffolding writing assignments (Why/how we'll get better final products by doing more, smaller projects leading up to the "big assignment."). In chapter 2, "Assessment and the Design of Writing Assignments," White not only gives us each of the assignments he uses with his beginning college writers, he helps us see, specifically, what goals he has for each assignment, and how each one prepares his students to tackle the next one.
This same chapter paraphrases Erika Lindemann's questions writing teachers should answer about their writing assignments (1987). I've found these SO useful!
This book is about 20 years old (1994), but holds up fairly well.
