Presents information about the state of North Carolina in an alphabetical arrangement.
Luminous with illustration and lavish with details, this rhyming alphabet book has something for everyone. Crane, who has written many state alphabet books in the "Discover America State by State" series for Sleeping Bear Press, lives in North Carolina. The author has done her homework very well, sometimes ferreting out little-known facts, turning them into rhyme for young readers—or listeners—and providing several background paragraphs for readers who want more information. The book features some of the better-known state landmarks: "A" is for Appalachian Mountains; "G" for Grandfather Mountain; "K" for Kill Devil Hills, home of the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Yet some lesser-known facts are present to delight us all, for example, "P" for Plott hounds, dogs bred by the Plott brothers who immigrated from Germany and settled in the mountains. These hounds, bred to hunt bears, are the official state dog, adopted as such in 1989. The back of the book features a page of "sticky" questions about the state, with answers—and more facts—presented upside down on the following page. Beautifully done! I cannot recommend this book more highly for libraries ranging from pre- and elementary schools to those of North Carolina's elected officials. 2003, Sleeping Bear Press, Ages 4 to adult.

"T is for Tar Heel" is a informational poem all about the state of North Carolina. The structure of the poem goes through the entire alphabet, and for each letter, it talks about something in North Carolina. Alongside the poem's verses, each page has a short informational summary about the topic the poem is focusing on. For examples: "A is for the Appalachian Mountains..." on the other side of the page, it discusses facts about the Appalachian Mountains! I chose to review this book because I have grown up in North Carolina almost all my life and I loved reading about NC's history, landmarks, and symbols in a creative but information- PACKED poem! I would specifically use this book with 4th grade students in North Carolina because 4th grade is when students learn about state history! Reading this book would be SUCH a great way integrate both ELA and Social Studies history!
In a classroom, I would use this book during a state history unit. I would begin the unit by reading this poem as a read aloud. I would make sure to read both the verses in the poem and the informational paragraphs on each page. Once I finish reading the book, I would have each student choose ONE North Carolina topic the poem discussed and do an individual research-based activity with it! Another idea I have is using this book during ELA. After reading the poem and teaching/ discussing the characteristics of a poem, I could have students create their own "A is for... B is for..." book based on either 1) their life (as a "getting to know us" activity) or 2) Another unit we have finished learning about in class. (depending on how formal I wanted to make the assignment).
This book is a WOW book to me because I just love how this incorporates BOTH ELA and Social Studies standards. I also love how while I was reading the book, most places discussed in North Carolina, I have been myself! This way, I would even be able to have discussions with students about my opinions on the places I have visited in North Carolina.
