Summer at The End of The World is an autobiographical novel, a fictionalization based upon true experiences taken from the author's life. Seeking, solace from the despair brought on by the sudden death of her husband, the book's central character flees to the Nova Scotian wilderness. There she embarks upon a journey of remembrance that ultimately leads her to redemption and healing. The author is the National Executive Director of Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). She is also an elder in the Presbyterian Church. Her book fits well into the categories of religious, inspirational, and spiritual, as well as gay and lesbian, since she speaks at some length about acceptance of gay and lesbian people within the Christian community. Kingdon is also the mother of a gay son.
