At the end of his career, strongman Louis Cyr tells his daughter how he came to be the strongest man in the world, in this graphic novel biography.
This short biography is perfect for reluctant readers and fans of graphic novels, as Cyr's relatively unknown story is told simply but with remarkable detail. Most pages are filled with small panels, interspersed with text boxes, and the illustrations are compelling and varied. In addition to the appeal of the format, the book contains a good deal of information about weight-lifting and circus life at the end of the 19th century. An afterward and brief reading list compliment this story of a man who grew up being told that "a man without strength is nothing," but who ultimately realizes that "the strongest man of all is the man who knows how to leave what he has loved with no regret."
The Horn Book's review emphasizes the emotion in the story and gives a strong feel for the illustrations. Publishers Weekly lingers over the illustrations but includes excellent details on the pacing and narration of the story.
