Stroke is an enormous health problem. It is the third major cause of death, and the major cause of adult neurological disability. As many as a quarter of women in their 80s may suffer stroke. It represents a huge financial burden for the NHS, costing more than heart disease. Stroke care has historically been poor in many places, but a revolution in care is taking place as a result of specific treatments such as stroke units and thrombolysis, which have been shown to markedly improve outcome. This has led to many countries reorganizing the way they offer stroke care.
Stroke Medicine is a practical handbook for the practicing physician. Written by a multi-disciplinary team of three practicing consultants from a leading UK stroke service, it provides an up-to-date and easily accessible source of information on all aspects of stroke care from acute care through rehabilitation and secondary prevention. Designed to be used both on the ward and in the outpatient room, it provides a practical approach to managing the stroke patient and is an invaluable source of information for stroke physicians, neurologists, geriatricians, and other specialists involved in the care of stroke patients. It is also a useful handbook for consultants and doctors in training.
Reviewer:Terri E Kiernan, MSN, FNP-BC(Mayo Clinic Hospital)
Description:This is a complete reference on the continuum of care for stroke patients.
Purpose:It is intended to assist clinicians in the care of stroke patients with easy to access, up-to-date information. These are worthy objectives as stroke care is evolving quickly with new research changing the guidelines we use yearly.
Audience:This handbook would be useful for any clinician looking after stroke patients, including neurology residents, stroke fellows, neurologists, and primary care providers.
Features:It covers all aspects of stroke care from anatomy and identification to investigations, secondary stroke prevention, and more. There are great illustrations, tables, and facts to assist clinicians in understanding the concepts. The index is helpful in finding concepts quickly on the go. The only limitation is the U.K. perspective, which sometimes differs from U.S. practice.
Assessment:I found this book useful, quick, and easy to use - and it does fit into a lab jacket pocket unlike many so-called handbooks!
