In the third hilarious installment of The Adventures of Stanley, our questing hero and his pals embark on an adventure that makes sea-dogs of them all.

Children's Literature

Stanley, the irrepressible pup hero, is in the park with his doggy friends. They are hungry but are shooed away from the picnic table. Even the trashcan full of discarded food is carted away before they can reach it. When they go after a ham sandwich in a boat, they are shocked to find themselves adrift and swept out to sea. Stanley decides that they are on their way to the end of Outside, where there surely will be a fence. What they assume is that that fence, over which they are hauled through the mist, has people on the top who bring them all the steak and sausages they can eat. This answer to all their dreams turns out to be a large ship. When they are rowed back to "his people" the dogs tell their friends about the end of Outside, the big fence, and the wonderful feast on top. "No dog has ever found that fence again but they think about it all the time." The canine quartet is brimming over with personality. Slavin takes advantage also of their different breeds and sizes to increase the comic situation. His double-page acrylic scenes depict the park, the crowds on the bridge watching the drifting boat, and a convincing ocean. Humor dominates the pages. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
