A bold look at the Amazon rain forest in poems and photographs. What makes the rain forest unique? Is it the sky? The birds? The river? If you look deep into the Amazon, you can find a caste system of ants, termites, and wasps, a caiman waiting quietly in the water, and nighttime dreams that float up to the stars. David Harrison's poems make the plants, the creatures, and the people of the Amazon come up from their roots, down from their nests, out from their huts, and into the minds of his readers.

David L. Harrison is the author of many poetry books for children as well as nonfiction and picture books. His nonfiction books include Caves and Mountains, two of seven titles in the Earthworks series from Boyds Mills Press. One of his best-known picture books is The Book of Giant Stories, which won the Christopher Award. He lives in Springfield, Missouri.

Doug Duncan is an orthopedic surgeon in Springfield, Missouri. His lifelong passion for photography started when he received his first Brownie camera in grade school. He journeyed with David Harrison down the Amazon River and is honored to contribute his first published photos to this poetic chronicle of the trip.
