Silent extras
Bevat zo'n beetje alles wat je van een Grunberg-boek mag verwachten: extreem onsympathieke personages, bizarre interne monologen en een obsessie met seks. Het mist alleen een beetje een punt. Waar Tirza nog een duidelijke verhaallijn en centrale thematiek bevatte, voelt Figuranten meer aan als een verzameling van absurde vignettes. Personages worden geïntroduceerd zonder heldere rol in het verhaal, karakterontwikkeling lijkt grotendeels te ontbreken en een climax - of überhaupt een duidelijk begin, midden en eind - heeft het boek niet.
Maar ja, plotloze Arnon Grunberg blijft Arnon Grunberg, en ik denk niet dat hij in staat is om iets oninteressants te schrijven. De schrijfstijl en de personages - hoe sociopatisch ze allemaal ook mogen zijn - blijven vermakelijk genoeg om me voor 300 pagina's te amuseren. De avonturen van drie totaal incapabele acteurs en hun Operatie-Brando heeft me nooit verveeld, hoewel een echt verhaal toch wel leuk zou zijn geweest.
