Fun Lighthouse Facts
Nations tallest lighthouse is Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks, North Carolina at 200 feet tall.
The Oldest Light Station is Boston Lighthouse, built in 1716, but was destroyed by the British during the Revolutionary War. Was rebuilt in 1783. Also this is the only lighthouse that still has a keeper!
Lost to the Civil War: Wades Point Lighthouse, Elizabeth City, North Carolina was destroyed by Union Troops in 1862.
Morris Island Lighthouse, Charleston, South Carolina, was destroyed by Union Troops after several raids between 1861-1864.
Wolf Island Lighthouse, Darien, Georgia was blown by Confederate troops year unknown.
Ship Island Lighthouse, off Mississippi in the Gulf of Mexico was burned by Confederate troops in 1861.
Many lighthouses have played a vital role in the history of our country, these are just a few. We as Americans need to play a vital role to keep our lighthouses from becoming extinct.
