Sewing Bits and Pieces: 35 Projects Using Fabric Scraps
Every sewist has a stash of scraps. I keep mine in plastic bags and bins, file boxes and just stacked up in piles. That's the reason I picked up Sewing Bits & Pieces. The subtitle is "35 Projects Using Fabric Scraps". If ever there was a phrase that would prick up a sewist's ears, that is it.
All of the projects in the book are unique and fanciful. They cover topics like "Kitchen" and "Party". The projects are heavy on applique which isn't my forte, so some of them I've skipped altogether, although I may come back to them at some point. My favorite is the Sunday Market Skirt. I've made several skirts using the instructions laid out there. The skirts are all comfortable and can be made over a weekend.
There's a short introduction that covers techniques and tools. The projects range from beginner to advanced, though, so there's the opportunity for a newbie sewist to make the easier projects and then level up to harder projects. The projects also lend themselves to alternatives. For example I made the scrappy silhouettes out of my daughter's handprint for Christmas gifts to grandparents one year.
This book would make a great gift for a sewist friend.
