Serbia's Great War
A great history of a topic too often neglected in most general histories, which tend to talk about Serbia when addressing the July Crisis, briefly forget about it, and then maybe cover its destruction in 1915. But, at the time, the Entente public and governments actually paid a good deal of attention to Serbia throughout the war, and its resistance soon became legendary.
This book is actually a shorter version of the Serbian edition, but it is pretty good nevertheless. Mitrović makes it clear that the assassination of Ferdinand was a rogue operation and that not even the Black Hand's chief was technically responsible. The assassins were all Austro-Hungarian nationals, and not even Austria-Hungary found any evidence that Serbia's government was behind the assassination. Although many Serbs rejoiced at the archduke's death, few Austrians or Hungarians cared too much.
Insightful and interesting, although it deals more with politics and diplomacy than military history.
