The self psychology of Heinz Kohut has been an important force in contemporary psychoanalytic thought and its ramifications for therapy have been extensively explored. Now, Marshall Silverstein offers the first analysis of the application of self psychology to projective diagnostic assessment. Differentiating the self psychological approach from an ego psychological interpretation of classical drive theory, he clearly outlines the principal contributions of Kohut, including the concepts of selfobject functions, empathy, transmuting internalization, and compensatory structure. Providing numerous clinical examples, he shows how the major selfobject functions of mirroring, idealization, and twinship can be identified on projective tests. Silverstein then demonstrates how conventional assessment approaches to grandiosity, self-esteem, and idealization can be reconceptualized within the framework of self psychology, and he also contrasts ego psychological interpretations with self psychological interpretations. This book makes a strong case for the importance of the clinical identification of self states. It will help practitioners understand their patients' varied attempts to repair an injury to the self to restore self-esteem (compensatory structure) and the clinical consequences of self-disorders, including disintegration products such as narcissistic rage and affect states characterized by empty depression, chronic boredom, and lack of zest.

کارن هورنای در این کتاب به موضوع خودروانکاوی(سÙل٠سایکو آنالیسیس) پرداخته Ú©Ù‡ البته عنوان کتاب(خودکاوی-سÙل٠آنالیسیس) به نظرم ناصØÛŒØ Ø§Ø³Øª. چون خودکاوی مقوله‌ای است Ú©Ù„ÛŒ Ú©Ù‡ ممکن است از Ø·ÙرÙÙ‚ گوناگونی انجام شود، در صورتی Ú©Ù‡ کارن هورنای در این کتاب به ØªÙˆØ¶ÛŒØ Ø±ÙˆØ§Ù†Ú©Ø§ÙˆÛŒ(سایکو آنالیسیس) خویشتن، بدون Øضور روانکاو می‌پردازد.
همچنین لازم به ØªÙˆØ¶ÛŒØ Ø§Ø³Øª Ú©Ù‡ برای خودروانکاوی، شخص می‌بایست چند جلسه‌ای را توسط روانکاو، روانکاوی شده باشد تا با کلیت Ùˆ Ù…Ùهوم Ùˆ روش روانکاوی آشنا گردد Ùˆ یا در غیر این صورت، قبلاً با نظریات Ùروید در این‌باره آشنایی پیدا کرده باشد. مطالعه‌ی کتابهای: تÙسیر خواب Ùˆ مکانیزم‌های دÙاع روانی از Ùروید ضروری می‌نمایند.
کتاب خودکاوی راهنمای قدم به قدم برای خودروانکاوی نیست بلکه نویسنده با ذکر چند مثال Ùˆ تÙسیر، به ØªØ´Ø±ÛŒØ Ø®ÙˆØ¯Ø±ÙˆØ§Ù†Ú©Ø§ÙˆÛŒ می‌پردازد؛ Ùˆ از آنجایی Ú©Ù‡ انسان همواره تمایل به دوری از Øقیقت دارد(زیرا Øقیقت تلخ است)ØŒ خودروانکاوی برایش کاری دشوار خواهد نمود چون به سختی Ù…ÛŒ تواند متوجه انکارها یا مقاومت‌های خودش در طول درمان بشود. برای همین، این کتاب نمی‌تواند به‌عنوان یک راهنما برای خودروانکاوی مورد استÙاده قرار بگیرد.
کسی Ú©Ù‡ علاقه به تجزیه Ùˆ تØلیل پیدا می‌کند Ùˆ شروع به این کار می‌کند نه تنها باید خود را بشناسد بلکه باید نسبت به همه‌ی کسانی Ú©Ù‡ بخشی از زندگی ÙˆÛŒ هستند Ùˆ به Ù†ØÙˆÛŒ با زندگی ÙˆÛŒ در ارتباط‌اند نیز شناخت پیدا کند. ولی بهتر است Ú©Ù‡ ابتدا از خودش شروع کند.
تا زمانی Ú©Ù‡ شخص اسیر تضادها Ùˆ موانع Ùˆ سدهای درونی خویش است، تصویری Ú©Ù‡ از شخصیت دیگران پیدا می‌کند یک تصویر تیره Ùˆ تØری٠شده است Ú©Ù‡ با واقعیت شخصیت آنها Ùاصله‌ی زیادی دارد.
Ù…ØمدجعÙر مصÙا هم Ø°Ø¨ÛŒØ Ø§Ù„Ù„Ù‡ منصوری وار(سبک بسط Ùˆ گسترش) به ترجمه‌ی آثار کارن هورنای پرداخته Ùˆ نثرش همان نثر سخنرانی‌هایش می‌باشد یعنی چیزی شبیه به کتاب تÙکر زائد. ترجمه‌اش روان است اما به گمانم ÙˆÙادار به متن اصلی نبوده است.
