Born in Dublin in 1896, Austin Clarke is generally considered the finest Irish poet of the generation following Yeats. His recurring themes are religion and religious doubt, radical politics including the politics of women's lives and, in his late, great and most richly complex poetry, the extremes of sexual terror, transformation and delight.
