Emily Callahan writes a simple essay about what Christmas means to her and how she would like to spend it with her family. No one in the family seems more surprised then she is when she wins the contest and a trip to Blueberry Island for Christmas. How does she convince the entire family that they want to go: Four Star Hotel? They load up the entire family--including two dogs, one famous for saving people (Santa Paw), and two cats. Then they miss their ferry and must cross the water to the island in a lobster boat. The excitement mounts as the dogs, Santa Paw and Cookie, dive into the icy waters and save their two cats. Finally they reach the island and more adventures await them as a bad snowstorm hits the island and leaves the Callahan family busy saving both people and animals. Of course, the true heroes are Santa Paw and Cookie. Dog stories have been around a long time. Dogs make great heroes and can have a variety of adventures. On the other hand, this title has one too many life-saving adventures to make the story seem believable. How many times can a canine save somebody and keep the story interesting? I appreciate the lovable family, but do real families come to an island for the first time and immediately become a part of it? Not too often in real life. I do think that Kris Edwards gives life to a cute story without much substance.
