This unique retelling of the ancient story of David & Saul picks upwhere the award-winning Runt the Brave left off. The undergroundmouse city of Tira-Nor is threatened by the cunning rat warrior Kreeg and his cutthroats. Only JaRed the 'Runt' recognizes the danger. But he's been driven into exile, rejected by the very mice he once saved. Beset by enemies, JaRed is about to discover the truth about himself. And it may cost him his life.

VOYA

This fantasy novel with inspirational tones continues the saga of the small, seemingly insignificant mouse named JaRed, known as Runt to most. Picking up from the events that ended in Runt the Brave (Clear Water Press, 2004/VOYA October 2004), JaRed has been banished by King SoSheth for treason, even though he managed to temporarily save Tira-Nor from destruction. JaRed is confused about TaMir's prophecy concerning the great ElShua promising that JaRed will be king. He is not sure if he wants the responsibility or if he even believes or has faith in a greater power anymore. While escaping hunters sent to kill him in exile, he saves DeStra, a female mouse from one of the rich and noble families, and he is presumed dead when he falls into the river. Runt is rescued from the river by Gibbs and his armed mice on their way to Tira-Nor to help the "king" save the city. His brother HaRed feels bad about betraying him and plans on spying to help the city. This novel has plenty of action, and the plot moves along quickly, with the promise of yet another book to come in the series. Young readers who like fantasy, especially with inspirational flavor, should enjoy this book. This story should appeal especially to fans of the Redwall series or Shadowmancer. Buy this book if the first in the series is already in the collection. If not, then buy it only if there is high demand by patrons who seek clean, fast-paced, and accessible fantasy and faith fiction.
