Right-Wing Populism in America
Investigative journalist and researcher Chip Berlet produces a comprehensive history of right-wing populism in American history, from the founding up to the turn of the century. The book is readable and interesting, as well as being exhaustively documented. Right-wing populism, according to Berlet, is different from broader populist movements in its obsession with "producerism," (the view that the majority middle, producers, are exploited from above by lazy elites and below by lazy parasites), which focuses on conspiracism (a tiny cabal of elites control the world, often in rightwing history a veiled anti-Semitism), scapegoating, inequality toward minorities and women, and an obsession with authoritarianism that is definitionally fascistic. He shows that the facist and neo-facist impulse in rightwing populism does not emerge merely as a top-down totalitarian impulse, but also in localism, county "constitutionalism," and the Christian Right, all of which are opposed to big government, but want control of their repressive visions to be controlled locally. Whether federal or local, fascism is fascism. A great read.
