Points for taking Marx (and Engels) seriously--something that has happened in sociology of religion only few times before the original publication in 1982 and never since. Overall, the book is, however, a bit all over the place. Different theories flow by without the reader coming out of it with a coherent framework. There's a commendable attempt at a Weberian historicization of theoretical ideas, but again, the overall point is a muddle. Nevertheless, in many ways still relevant.
