Maurie Markman and a panel of distinguished clinicians and leading clinical investigators comprehensively review the current status of regional antineoplastic drug delivery in the management of malignant disease. These authorities present a critical analysis of both the rationale and limitations of regional therapy and discuss potential clinical trials designed to explain the effectiveness of this method of therapy in special settings. Their presentations describe many exciting and innovative strategies for using regional drug delivery in anticancer therapy, including coverage of such areas of special interest as colorectal, skin, lung, pancreatic, ovarian, and gastrointestinal cancers. Comprehensive and authoritative, Regional Chemotherapy: Clinical Research and Practice offers surgical and medical oncologists and clinical cancer investigators a gold-standard review of the current role and future development of this increasingly powerful weapon in the battle against cancer.
This book is a description of the rationale, technique, and current clinical data for the use of regional chemotherapy in multiple diseases. Standard as well as investigational approaches are described. The purpose is to discuss current standard and experimental approaches to antineoplastic drug delivery. In general, comprehensive data on these subjects are dispersed throughout various medical journals and texts. The editor meets these objectives well, and in doing so may help to disseminate the common use of regional therapies. The audience is the practicing medical oncologist, surgical oncologist, and gynecological oncologist. To a lesser degree, this book is targeted for, or is useful to, urologists and interventional radiologists. The editor is a well-recognized expert in the field of regional and intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This book features a relatively thorough discussion of regional chemotherapy in most body cavities, and for most diseases for which there is a current use. Extensive coverage of intraperitoneal chemotherapy for ovarian and gastrointestinal cancers, mesothelioma, is a strength of the text. Likewise, isolated limb and organ perfusion are extensively covered. Omitted subjects include intracarotid chemotherapy for head and neck tumors, extensive coverage of chemomobolization for hepatocellular tumors, and chemotherapy of pleural and pericardial malignancies. In a least some chapters, there is an abundance of opinion and anecdote without pertinent data. This is a good book with a good purpose. Despite a few omissions it is comprehensive and can be a useful guide in caring for the individual patient or implementing a new approach to treatment in general. Some otherwise hard to find information is presented in this book, which may help in the general dissemination of and use of these therapies.
