The author points to the fragmentation of present-day psychology and its inability to make significant progress in such important areas of human functioning as perceiving, thinking, creativity and consciousness. He asserts that this lack of progress is due to the scientism the discipline has adopted, which in turn stems from its philosophical assumptions. Tracing these assumptions to the general paradigm of realism, he shows how an alternative paradigm that is derived from Kant's "critical" position can enable psychology to focus more directly on these important functions. He emphasizes the necessity in this process of psychology's clinical branch where it carries out the human observation that is needed for a significant knowledge.
