Private Gardens of the Fashion World
I cannot count how many times I have read this book; My copy is practically falling apart.
It's a majorly nostalgic book for me, and it's proved to me from such a young age how big of an impact a mere doll has had the world.
This book tracks Barbie history, and in turn Barbie herself tracks history. Each doll reflects the Western social norms of it's day and it's simply fascinating to see history personified on what is traditionally viewed as a children's toy.
This year this book turns 20 years old - making it very outdated. It doesn't include the influential "Fairytale Era" of 2001 to 2009 that was such a major part of my childhood, and so many other Gen Z's too.
It also doesn't include Barbie's 50th birthday in 2010, her downfall and her resurgence, as well as her redesign as a more "body positive" doll in 2016.
I would love to see a second edition of this book one day soon.
