Phenomenology is a subjective research method which seeks to describe how people feel about and make sense of experiences (usually encounters with the health system). This text challenges many nursing assumptions about this research method, in particular demonstrating that the new North American phenomenology is a misinterpretation and distortion of its European intellectual origins. It includes a methodology for doing research in a more authentic phenomenological vein. The author argues that true phenomenology is more objective than people assume. He also incorporates a strong element of critique, in contrast to the North American approach which emphasizes description.
