This vol. begins with a history of Philadelphia to set the scene for letters written in Philadelphia by visitors over the past 300 years since the city was founded by William Penn in 1682. In reading these letters, one becomes aware of a host of warmly appreciative comments. The selection of letters collected here, chosen from a myriad of possibilities, demonstrates what a rich genre this resource is & illuminates the immense contributions by those who, however, briefly, chose to dwell amongst us. By seeing how others saw them, Philadelphians & those other lovers of Philadelphia unfortunate enough not to live here can take an even greater pride in their great & enduring city. Illustrations.
