For decades Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) designed parks and park systems across the United States, leaving an enduring legacy of designed public space that is enjoyed, studied, and protected today. Olmsted's plans and professional correspondence are a rich source for understanding his remarkable contribution to the quality of urban life in this country and the development of the profession of landscape architecture. His writings also provide a unique record of society and politics in post-Civil War America. Historians, landscape architects, conservationists, city planners and citizens' groups continue to turn to Olmsted for inspiration in their planning and protection of public open space in our cities.
This latest volume of the Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted presents the record of his last years of residence in New York City. It includes reports on the design of Riverside and Morningside parks and Tompkins Square in Manhattan, as well as his comprehensive plan for the street system and rapid transit routes of the Bronx. It records his continuing work on Central Park and presents his final retrospective statement, "The Spoils of the Park." In addition, the volume contains an annotated version of the journal in which Olmsted recorded instances of political maneuvering and patronage politics in the years prior to his dismissal from the New York parks department in 1878. Later chapters chronicle the early stages of his planning of the Boston park system—the Back Bay Fens, Arnold Arboretum, and Riverway. Other major commissions, each with its own political complications, were the grounds of the U. S. Capitol, the completion of the new state capitol in Albany, the designing of a park on Mount Royal in Montreal, and construction of the park system of Buffalo, N. Y. The volume also presents Olmsted's commentary on issues of the times including Reconstruction policy and Civil Service reform.
The Olmsted Papers project is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the National Trust for the Humanities, the National Association for Olmsted Parks, as well as private foundations and individuals.

Histories analyses of colonialism have for many years struggled with the problem of the agency of the indigenous that is, many of the popular analyses of colonialism see indigenous peoples as those to whom things are done rather than actively involved mediating and constructing the relations of colonialism. Alongside this, many indigenous people see post-colonial and post-modern attention to representation and irony as disrespectful and as denigrating their existing cultural and political struggles. This book is a significant piece of work that seeks to debunk and critique both these sets of ideas: McCarthy explores not only the ways that Maori have been represented and displayed in New Zealand museums since the 1860s, but the ways that Maori have engaged (or not engaged) with museums and the ways that the shifting cultural politics of display and representation have been shaped by broader cultural and political ideals. Museum studies is not a set of literature I know well, but New Zealand's and broader colonial cultural histories is, and the book draws together key texts and approaches from the field which are woven together with impressive archival research and insider knowledge (McCarthy worked for several years at New Zealand's national museum in its various forms in the 1990s) to make a compelling case and present an impressive and important piece of work (I should also acknowledge that he is a good friend of several decades standing).
There is one surprising element – his use of Belich's typology of New Zealand's history that sees the period from the late 19th to the mid 20th centuries as one of 'recolonisation'. I don't like the label and think it misrepresents the era (and am not all that comfortable with the preriodisation either) but McCarthy uses the ideas well in exporing the various ideologies woven through museums and specific sectors. As such, he reminds me that although I disagree with the label and the periodisation, there is a set of key ideas running through the middle of the 20th century at least that hold together. All round, good stuff.
