Oscar the Hoo Forever Book

A nice survey of the century (the thirteenth) surrounding the years when this ten-kilometer stretch of lagoons and salt marshes on the Provençal coast became a part of the French crown, thereby giving that kingdom a toehold in the Mediterranean. Written as a synthesis of already-published scholarship (as of 1986). The section on Aigues Mortes itself seems pretty solid (four stars), but the background section on the Mediterranean context is pretty antiquated (two stars).
