Blessed with an incredible diversity of plant and animal life, Arkansas boasts a substantial number of species considered endemic; that is, occurring here and nowhere else in the world. In this unique and comprehensive treatise, a total of 117 taxa of plants and animals is documented as being endemic to the state. Included are 11 plants and 106 animals, of which 99 are invertebrates (2 annelid worms, 8 snails, 3 mussels, 21 crustaceans, 33 millipedes and centipedes, 2 pseudoscorpions, and 30 insects) and 7 are vertebrates (5 fishes and 2 salamanders). Besides extensive illustrations and photographs, Only in Arkansas provides references to the original distributions of each form within the state and reports known information of the general biology, evolutionary relationships, and habitat occupied by each endemic form. Each entry includes the scientific name followed by the last name of the person who described the species; the common name, if any; type depository (the institution holding the single specimen that is used for all final references); type locality (usually the place where the species was first collected); distribution records and maps (the counties in Arkansas from which specimens have been collected); and a discussion of general and specific information about the species.
