In 1987, the author began the first of five trips to Vietnam that he would undertake in the next 2 years. It was his first return visit since he had arrived there in 1967 as an infantry lieutenant. He had fought in the Vietnam War & had been seriously wounded in combat. Now he was coming back as part of an effort to extend humanitarian aid to a struggling Vietnamese people. This is the story of his journeys: the official trips themselves, possibly initial moves towards rapprochement; & his own internal journey from hatred & suspicion to a larger understanding of the commonality of human suffering & our deep need for healing.
