Neuroscience And Religion Book

After hearing Mr. Morris interviewed on a national radio program, I purchased this book with high hopes.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed from the beginning. I had hoped for a collections of sermons that struggled with the real Biblical tensions around the definition of healing, the role of the church in healing and the difficulty of when God does not chose to heal. I think I was looking for an approach similar to Piper and Grudem's work "Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood", that addressed the concept of healing.

Instead, this book is a very affluent, educated, comfortable collection of homiletic musings about healing, not strong Biblical sermons. While Biblical texts are referenced, they are neither exegetic nor integrated.

The speakers ruminate on many topics, but don't seem to be interested engaging a truly Biblical understanding or worldview in regard to healing. Rather, they speak in cultural, psychological, medical, and social justice terms. They engage Buddhist legends, references to God as "herself" and numerous other extra Biblical ideas. It's all very intelligent, but lacking wisdom that comes from the Word.

I found them to be Christians thinking the thoughts of the world. If this kind of shallow, recycled, thoughts are what the world has to offer people in painful need of healing, the Church has few answers at all. I kept reading, hoping that because they were individual works by many different people, there would be at least one redeeming chapter. But to no avail... I have read the journals of people dying of cancer as they wrestle with the LORD and the Biblical text that were more helpful, more Biblical, more inspiring and more enlightening than this work.
