Nature's Cruel Stepdames: Murderous Women in the Street Literature of Sevententh Centruy England (Medieval and Renaissance Literary Studies Series) written by Susan C. Staub

Overview:

This study presents a unique selection of seventeenth century pamphlets revealing the popular press's obsessive concern with female violence - a violence that is almost always domestic - along with a discussion of the texts' historical and cultural contexts.

"A selection of seventeenth century pamphlets revealing the popular press's obsessive concern with female violence--usually domestic--and a discussion of the texts' historical and cultural contexts"--Provided by publisher.

Synopsis:

They poisoned husbands, abandoned inconvenient babies, and murdered their own children. By doing so they were reviled in the popular press, who fed a public hungry for cheap pamphlets with stories of violent women. They were also tried and executed, a process that required their being a legal identity for the first time in their lives. Staub (English, Appalachian State U.) provides a comprehensive commentary on the 11 texts she presents here, showing how these quickly-produced pamphlets reflect the great religious, cultural, and political changes of the seventeenth centuries and the corresponding anxieties and contradictions. Staub provides the texts in full, showing how fascination with female violence created what amounted to near-hysterical justifications of patriarchy. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
