The misfortunes of Mrs Honey's Hat have made young readers laugh for more than a decade. Now, they can follow Pam Adams's lovable grandmother in three new adventures: a dream adventure with pirates, a hilarious foreign holiday and the mystery of the missing glasses.

Children's Literature

In this playful book, Mrs. Honey's Monday starts out nicely enough. She's at the park, sitting on the bench and knitting as her grandson Peter romps nearby. She's so engrossed in her knitting, however, that she doesn't notice when he takes all the feathers from her fancy hat and leaves his bubble gum stuck behind. As she goes through her week, similar things happen as she and her hat go on their various outings. By Sunday, she notices people are staring at her hat, and she's wondering if she needs a new one? A quick check in the mirror reveals that she already has a "new" hat, thanks to the substitute decorations left by pilfering cats, spiders, cows, birds and the like. And she's not sure she likes it! While Mrs. Honey may have been clueless about the changes occurring to her hat each day, the illustrations let the reader in on the joke. Kids will enjoy the bold, simple design and color palette used by Ms. Adam's in this funny picture book. Young readers can play a "memory game" tagged onto the end of the story, in which cut-out illustrations of objects taken off or added onto the hat are printed, along with their names in easy-to-read text. The days of the week are shown as well, so kids can not only match what item was replaced by another on Mrs. Honey's hat, but they can match-up what was switched with the day the switcheroo happened, too. This book is a fun choice for the home or school library. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree
