Mountain men, also known as trappers, were men who made their livelihood trapping animals and selling the furs or hides to store owners. They were most often young men because they had to be physically strong and able to endure hardship. John Colter was one such man. Colter was a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition but left the expedition to join a band of trappers. It is believed that while working with other trappers, Colter discovered Yellowstone National Park. But when he told others about the hot geysers in the area, no one believed him. Readers will also learn about trappers Jim Bridger and Jedediah Smith, as well as about the fur trade itself. It has an index, a glossary and a list of recommended web sites for further research.
