Alex the pig loves to eat, even between meals. When his mother catches him snacking on new potatoes, she sends him off to wash his dirty hooves in the river. On the way, he can’t resist a bush full of luscious raspberries. But just as he is about to eat one, a huge shadow looms over him. It is a monster who also loves to eat and can’t resist a bite between meals. Beautifully illustrated, this amusing tale takes young readers through all the wild reasons Alex comes up with so that he doesn't become the monster's next snack.

Children's Literature

After a scolding from his mother Alex, a greedy little pig, just can't resist stopping to pick some raspberries. But a monster looms above him preparing to eat him. As Alex begs, "Monster, don't eat me!" the monster snacks on the raspberries instead, putting Alex in his pocket. When he takes Alex out, Alex pleads again, sending the monster off instead after a baby elephant he has made up. The next time he is threatened with being eaten, Alex again begs him not to, promising a tasty Dodu-Dodu bird up in a cloud instead. When he can't find the bird, the monster again prepares to eat Alex, but is put off by the repeated refrain and suggestion of thousands of rabbits in tunnels underfoot. Finding nothing there, the monster is really ready to eat Alex, when there is an amusing surprise ending. Cneut generates complex scenes for his anthropomorphic animals, with crowds of odd creatures, all done with textured three-dimensional qualities. Alex is an appealing young pig; the monster a rather nasty-looking rhino-like beast. This is a surreal adventure, with Alex's red toy car and the monster's blue toy truck in all scenes provoking possible symbolic meanings.
