Guigo Il è uno dei primi certosini, questi discreti e austeri monaci che vivevano nell'ombra e nel silenzio, occupati nella meditazione delle "verità ultime". Le notizie circa la sua vita sono scarsissime: certamente fra le cause del riserbo delle fonti entra quell'amore al silenzio riguardo a se stessi caratteristico della spiritualità certosina. Di lui sappiamo solo che nel 1173 è già monaco con responsabilità e che in quello stesso anno o nell'anno successivo venne eletto nono priore della Grande Certosa. Più tardi dimissionò dall'incarico, quindi morì nel 1188. Di lui ci restano alcune Meditazioni sotto forma di lectio divina, un Commento al Magnificat e la Scala claustralium, scritto dedicato all'amico Gervaso, cui un tempo Guigo fu unito ma dal quale era costretto a vivere separato
